Self Care

by Shanna Herrmann |

Finding the time to take care of yourself isn't always easy. We're all crazy busy with work, friends, family, responsibilities, taking care of everyone but ourselves. But remember: if you don't take care of yourself, you have nothing to give! So remember to focus on yourself once in a while, we promise it will make a difference.

Some people (like us) don't need to be told twice, but a good night's sleep is essential. In order to master the day that lies ahead, make sure to get enough z's every night. Not everyone needs 8 hours, some might feel their bodies feel perfectly rested after 7 and some need at least 9! Try to figure out how many hours make you feel the best when waking up the next day and really try to get them in every night - even if it means going to bed at 10 pm. You need the rest in order to function properly!

If you've never tried it or think it's not for you, give it another go. We promise it's worth it! A few minutes of meditation every day can reduce stress and anxiety, improve your immune system, energy level, breathing and heart rate. The list of benefits goes on and on! There are loads of guided meditations on YouTube, find one you like and take 10 minutes out of your day to focus on yourself.

Sounds super mundane, but a breath of fresh air is always a good idea. Taking a short walk will clear your head and get your body moving. If you're not feeling up to par, spending some time outside will be sure to brighten your mood and make you feel better. And we don't really have to tell you that moving your body is good for your mind and body and therefore is the best form of self care, right?

On that note: "You'll feel so much better afterwards!" is actually not just a motivational line, it's  true. And you know it! And you also know that (regular) exercise is one of the most important parts of taking care of yourself. Our body is made to move, so if you don't like hitting the gym, try and get some kind of movement in on a regular basis - your body and mind will thank you!

You knew this was coming, right? But seriously, nothing screams self care like taking time to focus on your nails. It's a fairly simple task that can make all the difference. If you don't feel like doing them yourself, go out and get them done at your fave salon and sit back and relax. A fresh mani or pedi will also boost your self-esteem and make you feel much better right away. And if you don't want to do the whole shebang, at least treat your cuticles to some cuticle oil.

Find an area in your home and clear it up. It could be as small as one drawer, or your whole pantry. Maybe there is something that has been bothering you for ages? Tackle it. And it doesn't matter if you're an organizational person or more of a chaos queen, the feeling of satisfaction will be the same and your future self will thank you.
